There is an evolutionary purpose to healing shame.
We live in challenging times. The toxic shame that has been passed down from generation to generation has erupted in many ways at this time. All that shame begins to shut us down and separate us from our feelings and desire. It not only separates us from ourselves, it separates us from each other.
This is where an understanding of where shame comes from and how it affects us becomes vital. Shame comes from isolation, from boundary violations and from an inability to tolerate difference. As therapists and helpers, we have an important role to play in this process. If we embrace shame, we can transform toxic shame into healthy shame. We can focus on coming together and being united, on reaching out rather than pulling in and blaming others, and on choosing hope over fear. By looking at shame as a painful, but useful, source of information, of where we need to and long to heal, it can be embraced instead of resisted.
This workshop is in celebration of our new book: Embracing Shame: How to Stop Resisting Shame and Transform It Into a Powerful Ally. It is designed to undo the aloneness and loss we all feel right now by sharing as a community; the workshop will be interactive. Coming from a heart-centered place, we will share concepts and exercises to help ourselves and our clients strengthen and replenish in the face of all we have been through, both personally and as a world.
