Shame is at the root of all addictions.
Understanding, reducing, and transforming shame is the key to freeing someone from addiction. Denial is one of four major reactions to shame. When an addict’s denial can be pierced and properly worked with, the shame that the addiction is attempting to cover can be gently healed. In addition to the shame and sense of isolation that leads to addiction, there is additional shame that arises about being an addict. This shame on top of shame is a reason for frequent relapses in people’s recovery.
Awareness and attention to the primary and secondary shame is crucial to long-term recovery because while shame starts addiction, shame also keeps the crutch of addiction going. Working with addictions can be challenging because, while the client may seek to heal, letting go of the addiction is a huge, terrifying unknown.
In this workshop, you will learn how work very carefully and directly, with compassion and psycho-education, to counter the shame that has been causing and maintains the addiction. You will learn how to become a true support to the part of the client that wants to heal and help them find new paths, while also gently challenging the unhelpful behavior. We will model how to work with addiction from substances - food, alcohol, drugs - and/or sex, work, gaming, and exercise addictions. As demonstrated in the famous “rat park” experiment, addiction comes from a paucity of pleasurable, nurturing behaviors and experiences. You will learn to help clients broaden their experience and find and seek out resources - people, places and other sources of pleasure, ease and belonging that can sustain them.
